Voice over IP (VoIP) is a dream concept that has been a while in the making. The idea of conducting all your telephone calls over the Internet - and avoiding high long distance charges in the process - is an attractive one for any budget-conscious manager.

Quality and reliability used to be big problems for IP phone services in the past but advances in the technology now mean phone systems, like the one provided by Mitel, can provide quality of service as well as the cost savings.

 

Basically it’s a language that permits the human voice to be carried in data-packet format. This means voice conversations can be carried and handled by exactly the same network and equipment, and over the same infrastructure that is in everyday use for data transmissions.

A VoIP solution consists of special telephone handset equipment that coverts voice to data, special switches that direct that to its destination and is reconverted back into a recognisable human voice at the other end.
